#COP16 - will anything change?
Whatever the answer to that question, I'm a firm believer that we can't wait for grand gestures and governments to turn the tide. We have to crack on and do what we can, with what we've got.
I'm lucky enough to have a garden. And this year I've extended my wildflower meadow in the back garden to cover almost the entire lawned area. Whilst it doesn't look like much here, and it won't be an overnight success, it will provide more floristic diversity, food plants for insects, habitat for amphibians, small mammals and lots more beside. It's also constantly changing and a joy to discover what new species appear.
My meadow in the front (on very poor soil) continues to go from strength to strength. This year yellow rattle had a field day and we put up a sign so that people could see what was growing. We've had so many interested people looking, taking photos and stopping for a chat about it. And, we've even inspired a few other people to do the same in their gardens, and provided them with seed to get started.
Maybe a grass roots (ha!) movement like this could just help bring us back from the brink if it gained more momentum...
