Birds have been particularly hard hit by the biodiversity crisis and their numbers are plummeting at an alarming rate, particularly in the UK, Germany and other European countries. Dawn Chorus is a project whose mission is to encourage people across the world to collect bird songs for biodiversity research, art and to raise awareness about the wonders and threats to nature.

The Challenge

The Dawn Chorus project was set up by Biotopia - a German life sciences museum with the scientific goal of documenting bird diversity over time using sound recordings through the help of citizen scientists.

The main challenge of the project was to find a way to simplify the recording process and to increase and standardise the scientific quality of the audio recordings, while at the same time providing room for creativity and arts.

Our Solution

Natural Apptitude created a website and app which enables people to:

  • Record and upload their recordings in situ
  • Identify and add the species present in the recording
  • View and interact with all the records on the global Dawn Chorus sound map
  • Go beyond the typical citizen science experience by exploring the world of birdsong in more creative ways on the website by using the “Sonic Feather” app feature which allows users to transform their recordings into works of art

Impact & Next Steps

The Dawn Chorus project continues to go from strength to strength and has collected recordings from over 40 countries including Uganda, New Zealand, India, Brazil, Alaska and Japan.

During the main collection period from 1st to 31st May in 2023, over 11,200 recordings were uploaded.  These recordings are helping to significantly expand the collection database and support biodiversity research.

Dawn Chorus is a project which is continually evolving and drawing on new technologies so watch this space…
